Engineers Australia CDR Requirements & Preparation Checklist
A current, practical checklist for the CDR pathway: documents, three Career Episodes, Summary Statement, CPD, paragraph mapping and evidence checks before you lodge.
A CDR is not one document. It is a connected evidence set used in the Engineers Australia migration skills assessment process. The practical challenge is making sure the administrative documents, three Career Episodes, Summary Statement and supporting evidence agree with each other.
Use this guide as a preparation checklist, then verify the current Engineers Australia instructions before lodging because assessment requirements can change.
- First confirm that the CDR pathway is the pathway you need
- Core identity, qualification and application documents
- Three Career Episodes are the core CDR evidence
- The Summary Statement is an evidence map, not another essay
- Prepare Continuing Professional Development information carefully
- Run a cross-document consistency check
- Do a technical-evidence check, not only a grammar check
- Final CDR preparation checklist
First confirm that the CDR pathway is the pathway you need
Engineers Australia has accredited qualification pathways as well as the Competency Demonstration Report pathway. Do not assume that every engineering applicant needs to prepare a CDR. Check the current assessment pathway information for your qualification before investing time in Career Episodes.
If the CDR pathway applies, the Career Episodes and Summary Statement are used to demonstrate entry-to-practice competency for the occupational category relevant to your assessment.
Core identity, qualification and application documents
Engineers Australia’s current application guidance lists identity, qualification, CV and English-language evidence among the documents that may be required. The exact set depends on the pathway and your circumstances, so use the current official checklist rather than relying on an old sample package.
- Valid passport bio-data evidence and required identity material.
- Detailed CV/resume.
- Degree certificate/testamur and academic transcripts.
- Official translations where documents are not in English.
- English-language competency evidence unless an applicable exemption is met.
- Any additional evidence requested for your assessment type or circumstances.
Three Career Episodes are the core CDR evidence
Engineers Australia’s January 2026 preparation guidance states that CDR applicants provide three written Career Episodes and explain how they developed and demonstrated the entry-to-practice competencies for their occupational category. The episodes collectively need to provide the required competency evidence.
Each paragraph should be numbered because the Summary Statement uses those paragraph numbers to cross-reference competency evidence. If an episode is based on employment, current Engineers Australia guidance also requires an employer reference letter.
- Choose experiences you can describe accurately and substantiate.
- Make your personal engineering contribution identifiable.
- Explain engineering methods, analysis and decisions rather than only project background.
- Connect calculations, designs, models, data or tests to the decisions they informed.
- Describe meaningful technical problems, constraints and how you responded.
- Explain how important outcomes were checked or verified.
The Summary Statement is an evidence map, not another essay
The Summary Statement provides an overview of the competencies demonstrated in the Career Episodes. Engineers Australia asks applicants to map competency elements to specific numbered Career Episode paragraphs using the template for the relevant occupational category.
A useful preparation check is to complete the episodes first, then test whether each mapping points to genuine evidence. If you cannot find a convincing paragraph, revisit the underlying episode and add only facts from work you actually performed.
Prepare Continuing Professional Development information carefully
CPD is part of CDR preparation. Keep the information factual and consistent with your professional history. Use the current Engineers Australia instructions for the required presentation and do not invent activities to make the list appear stronger.
Run a cross-document consistency check
Many avoidable problems are not about writing quality; they are contradictions between documents. Before finalising, compare dates, employer names, job titles, project periods, qualifications and technical claims across the CV, Career Episodes, employment evidence and other supporting material.
- Do project dates fit within the employment or study period stated elsewhere?
- Are employer and client names used consistently?
- Does your stated role match the responsibilities you describe?
- Can employment-based Career Episodes be supported by the required employment evidence?
- Are technical claims consistent with your actual responsibility and seniority?
- Do Summary Statement references still point to the correct paragraphs after editing?
Do a technical-evidence check, not only a grammar check
A polished Career Episode can still be weak if it mainly describes meetings, responsibilities and project outcomes. Review whether the episodes actually reveal engineering thinking: the problem, inputs, method, analysis, decision and verification.
Do not add calculations or standards simply because a sample CDR contains them. The strongest evidence is evidence you genuinely used and can explain.
Final CDR preparation checklist
- I confirmed that the CDR pathway applies to my assessment.
- I checked the current Engineers Australia application instructions.
- I have three genuine Career Episode experiences.
- My Career Episode paragraphs are numbered consistently.
- My personal engineering contribution is clear.
- Technical claims are supported by real analysis, calculations, design, data, methods or verification where relevant.
- Employment-based episodes have the required employment evidence.
- I completed the correct Summary Statement for my occupational category.
- Every Summary Statement mapping points to real Career Episode evidence.
- My CPD information is complete and factual.
- Names, dates, roles and project details are consistent across documents.
- I performed a final accuracy and authorship review before submission.
